Man Booker winner set for world tour following flurry of foreign rights deals
3 December 2007
Anne Enright, author of this year’s Man Booker Prize winning novel The Gathering, is preparing for a gruelling world tour in 2008.
Her publishers, Jonathan Cape (Random House), are currently putting together her 2008 schedule which includes visits to Canada, USA, Hong Kong, Australia, Columbia, New Zealand and Italy. In the UK Enright is also expected to be speaking at a host of other key literary festivals.
Requests are said to be flooding in for the Irish novelist following her astounding win at the Man Booker Prize 2007, where her novel The Gathering saw off competition from favourites Ian McEwan and Lloyd Jones.
Since winning the Man Booker Prize, The Gathering has gone on to be sold in Albania, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Holland, Italy, Korea, Latvia, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Catalan and Sweden.
The Gathering, described by the Chair of Judges 2007 as a ‘powerful, uncomfortable and even at times angry book’ has now been sold to a total of over 31 countries around the world.
Robin Robertson, Deputy Publishing Director at Jonathan Cape said today,
”As one might expect, the impact on sales was immediate and dramatic. What has been equally gratifying is the continuing sales momentum, with the novel looking set to sell vigorously through the Christmas period. Jonathan Cape currently has 175,000 copies in print, and Grove Atlantic has a similar figure in the States. In Ireland, The Gathering has spent five weeks at No. 1.”
”After the announcement, foreign rights were quickly sold in 25 countries, bringing the total to 31 territories.”
”Anne Enright has been asked to attend innumerable literary festivals, and also to take part in promotional tours of many of the countries in which the book is shortly to be published. In the next year she will be in Columbia, the United States, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and a number of European countries.”
More information about Anne Enright’s public appearances will be available from her publisher’s website at www.randomhouse.co.uk.
