Achievements of prize’s 40 years recognised

Literary editor hails the positive impact of the literary prize

9 March 2008

Robert McCrum, literary editor of The Observer, has hailed the achievements of the Man Booker Prize’s 40 year history noting that the ‘characteristically British combination of a great sporting fixture and a cultural jamboree… has three important achievements to its credit.

Writing in The Observer (9 March 2008), McCrum demonstrates how the prize has successfully promoted ‘a global readership in British and Commonwealth Fiction’, ‘helped to sell new fiction by unknown writers’ and ‘posted an impressive list of winners’.

McCrum goes on to say that this year’s The Best of the Booker award is sure to throw up an interesting winner, above all because the winner will be decided by the public following the shortlist announcement in May.
