Salman Rushdie, winner of the Best of the Booker prize, sent a message of thanks via video to the award ceremony on 10 July.
The author thanked the public for voting Midnight's Children as the Best of the Booker. He also complimented the other authors and novels on the shortlist which included Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda and JM Coetzee's Disgrace.
Salman Rushdie's sons, Zafar and Milan, attended the ceremony at London's Southbank Centre, and accepted the award on their father's behalf.
Rushdie commented that there was something "rather wonderful about my real children accepting a prize for my imaginary children".
