Barry wins Costa Awards for The Secret Scripture
Man Booker shortlisted novel wins overall prize
28 January 2009
Sebastian Barry, who was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2008, has been named winner of the Costa Book Awards with his novel The Secret Scripture. He wins the £25,000 prize.
Matthew Parris, chair of judges, said it had been 'an extraordinarily close finish'.
The Secret Scripture was the bookies' favourite to win the Man Booker Prize 2008 and the judging panel made no secret that it came narrowly behind winner The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga.
