US Publisher Richard Seaver dies

Publisher of Kadare dies aged 82

Richard Seaver, the long standing US publisher of Man Booker International Prize winner Ismail Kadare, has died today (5 Jan 2009).

An editor, translator and publisher, Richard Seaver brought a wealth of writers including Samuel Beckett, Henry Miller, William Burroughs and the Marquis de Sade to America readers.

Seaver was seen as a vital figure in bringing European writers into the American limelight. For the past 20 years, Richard Seaver and his wife Jeannette ran Arcade Publishing, which has become one of the most prominent independent publishers left in the United States, specialising in work by authors from all over the world.
