The First Chapter Series publishes The Line of Beauty
Oak Tree Fine Press publishes latest in Man Booker series
24 March 2009
A beautifully produced volume of The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst has recently been published by charity publishers Oak Tree Fine Press. The project, which brings together Alan Hollinghurst's 2004 Man Booker Prize winning work and the artists Gilbert and George, is just one volume from a unique series aimed at raising money for a children's charity.
The First Chapter Series is a new collaboration between Oak Tree Fine Press, Man Booker Prize winning authors and numerous artists to raise money for children made vulnerable by HIV and AIDS.
The series started out as a discussion between Bruce Howard, Director of Oak Tree Fine Press, and J.M. Coetzee, winner of the Booker Prize in 1983 and 1999. Howard, who was living and fundraising in South Africa, met with Coetzee about getting some books signed. Through discussions about fundraising the idea of The First Chapter Series was born, with Coetzee offering a number of authors to contact about contributions
Each volume in the series will feature the opening sequence of a Man Booker winner alongside a striking image inspired by the text. Immaculately hand-bound and slip-cased, all editions are signed by both author and artist, with profits going to children's shelters in Africa.
The series features a wide variety of artistic styles - from copper plate etching to photo-montage - reflecting the diversity of the Man Booker authors themselves. Nadine Gordimer, A.S.Byatt, Barry Unsworth, Salman Rushdie, D.B.C. Pierre and Thomas Kenneally will also be taking part in the series.
