Booker Prize winner dies after long struggle with cancer

Stanley Middleton, who won the Booker Prize in 1974 with his novel Holiday, has died aged 89 after a long struggle with cancer.
Middleton was born in August 1919 in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire. He taught English at a school in Nottingham for many years after graduating from University College Nottingham. His first novel, A Short Answer was published in 1958.
Middleton's prolific writing career spanned over 60 years and 44 novels. Many of his books were set in his home town of Nottingham. His last novel ‘Her Three Wise Men' was published in 2003.
Middleton shared the Booker Prize in 1974 with Nadine Gordimer's The Conservationist.
Tony Whittome, Middleton's editor for more than 25 years said he had been working on a new novel.
