Animal’s People sold around the world

Indra Sinha’s remarkable novel reaches international audience

25 September 2007

US rights to Indra Sinha’s shortlisted novel, Animal’s People, have been sold to Simon and Schuster in New York.

The US deal follows a number of translation deals for Sinha’s shortlisted novel, most recently Hebrew rights, Polish rights and Japanese rights. The book has also been sold to Czech Republic, Greece, Holland, Italy, Norway and Romania.

Animal’s People was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize earlier this month. It tells the story of a teenage boy whose back is badly twisted following a chemical catastrophe in India. The story is based in the city of Khaufpur, but the novel is a thinly disguised depiction of the Bhopal disaster and its aftermath.

The book is dedicated to Sinha’s friend Sunil Kumar, who was affected by the disaster and died last July.
