Synopsis
Tiger Bay, Cardiff, 1948. Frank Gauci steps off the Callisto into the coldest winter ever clutching a cardboard suitcase. When Frankie and his best friend Salvatore open the doors of the Moonlight Cafe, life seems good: downstairs there is sweet music, hot food, beautiful girls; and upstairs there is gambling. Through the eyes of Dolores the Gaucis’ youngest child, Trezza Azzopardi reveals a world rarely seen in fiction – the Cardiff underworld of the sixties.
Author Biography
Trezza Azzopardi was born in Cardiff in 1961. She studied Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia and is currently a lecturer there. Time Out magazine selected her story as the best of the UEA anthology of her year. Her first novel, The Hiding Place (2000) won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize and was shortlisted for both the Booker Prize for Fiction and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for fiction). Her third novel, Winterton Blue, was published in 2007. Trezza Azzopardi lives in Norwich.
